It's all About the Love
of Horses
Heel First Landings came about as a natural extension of my
lifelong love affair with horses. There were always horses
around my family's place, where I learned to ride as a child.
My father took care of all the needs of our horses back then.
Horses came and went, but mostly we had horses to ride as
I was growing up. That tradition continued when I married
and began my own family.
Then, in 1996, when our daughter, Erin,
went off to college, we purchased Missy, a bay mare with feet
that we were told would always require shoes. I began to suspect,
though, that shoes were a problem for her, and when she came
limping up from the pasture one day with a front shoe torn
off, I knew I had to find a way to help her.
Heel First Landings to the Rescue
That began the wonderful odyssey that led me to become a highly
trained professional in natural hoof care and the decision
to open Heel First Landings. And from my childhood to where
I am today, always at the heart of it all have been horses.
Since we bought Missy, we've been rescuing horses, and our
pasture is home to 10 of them, from a mini named Harley to
a draft cross, McKenzie's Shadow.
As the proprietor of Heel First Landings,
I now have about two hundred horses under my care, of many
different breeds. Some are just beginning the transition phase,
going shoeless for the first time in many years. I love watching
their hooves change and become sound again. THAT, for me,
will never get old.
